Excellent look, great job . Yep, IMHO, any chrome trim on Series II should go. One vote here to do the doors, it will really bring the eye appeal up to today'* looks. If you look around, there are very few pop sedans today with any chrome body trim. Styles change, and peoples' eye-appetite for chrome comes and goes.
Another excellent call on the plastic primer. 7-8 yrs ago, it wasn't around, and I did my Green '95'* trim in black. Used some wide gloss black pinstripe from Poop Boys for straight runs.. doors, bumper, rear... used a good commercial adhesive/primer and paint for curves around windows etc. Nope, no-go for the paint. In a year or so it was failing. Funny, but the tape lasted till this past year, and it was actually the plastic film over the chrome which was bubbling and giving out.
FWIW... I think a pure ammonia wipe-on/wipe-off blast welds Fusion paint to plastic. My '98 is white, so I wanted to update the dark gray interior plastic trim pieces, dash cover, and console to a piano smooth gloss black. After I got a few coats of Fusion on some test pieces, I found that i could switch to just about any acrylic paint in a spray can. I opted for a basic indoor/outdoor black gloss until the pieces were completely smooth. (It has to be perfectly smooth or it will look like vinyl or patent leather) Then I built up a bunch of clear layers until it got glassy.
Some of those "hammered metal" and carbon-fiber-like colors had an interesting look. And I'm guessing you could get some smooth looks with coatings like pearling. With a can of high solids gloss clear, you can whip up some wicked version of a marble or colored glass trim interior. You can also do some sick nighttime effects by including Rustoleum'* hyper-reflective (it comes out clear) in the clear layers.
Sorry for the way OT.
Good job with your car.
