key fob/remote start help

key fob/remote start help
I'm trying to find out if I can buy used key fobs and program them to my car. I have a 07 Torrent. It has factory programmed keyless entry and remote start. But when we bought the vehicle it did not come with remotes. The dealer tells me I have to have it programmed by them. The Internet says I can program them with a simple procedure. If anyone has done this please let me know how it worked. Thanks
I know this isn't Pontiac forum but with this as a GM in general question I know it will get seen more here

Its in he owners manual they have listed on pontiac website;
This display allows you to match the Remote
Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter to your vehicle.
To match a RKE transmitter to your vehicle, do the
following:
1. Make sure the vehicle is in PARK (P).
2. Press the vehicle information button until
PRESS (check mark) TO RELEARN REMOTE KEY
displays.
3. Press the set/reset button.
The message REMOTE KEY LEARNING
ACTIVE will display.
4. Press and hold the lock and unlock buttons
on the first transmitter at the same time for
about 15 seconds.
A chime will sound indicating that the
transmitter is matched.
5. To match additional transmitters at this time,
repeat Step 3.
Each vehicle can have a maximum of four
transmitters matched to it.
6. To exit the programming mode, you must
cycle the key to LOCK

Josh Welcome to the forums.
Without having one key fob with the FCC ID #* or the GM/Uta #* from the back of the vehicles key fob it can get a bit tricky.
I am wondering if GM may be able to provide you with such information specific from your VIN number to look up.
There are sites like this one that may be accurate though?
Pontiac Key Fob | Pontiac Remote Starter | KeylessRemotes4u.com
I am not so sure that I would want a used one considering it is a wear item, and that you have to rely on it, and program it.
I have discovered that you can call some local automotive locksmiths, and they can offer new generic remotes or even use the correct GM remote & program them for a nominal fee.

Josh as we like to keep things in the correct sections here, I moved this to the Pontiac section.
You don't have to worry, your post will get noticed regardless of section you post into!

Well they sent me 1 of the 2 key fobs I ordered. I have tried several times to program it using the instructions in my manual with no luck. Not sure if the instructions only work if you still have a working remote or what. Anyone have any advice?

First, you have to know if you have the correct remote(*).......
Go to your local GM parts department, and they can look up the correct part number, by your VIN number...compare that number to the number on the back of your fob......if correct, hand your fob to the parts guy, and he can test your fob on a special tester they have......
If the fob tests out ok, then there are two possibilities.....your receiver/system has a problem, or it'* possible the number of fobs already programmed to your system has maxed out......in either case, it takes a Tech II to diagnose and fix/program....
