Default Ignition Starter Switch 2006 Grand Prix GT

Anybody here ever replaced a Ignition Switch, not the key part, but the switch behind it?
I have read the whole drivers side dash has to come off, hopefully that is not correct, but I heard there was some like bike cable that wen to to something, and a passkey anti theft exciter wire or some crap...
I hear mechanics can want a few hundred for the job, I have not asked mine yet...

Occasionally I turn the key and get nothing, this is right after a short drive and I cut it off for like 3 minutes..
It happens every once and a while, deff not the batt, I am thinking ignition switch or starter...

PS, Screw GM for being cheap asses, I found out what the recall fix is for my Grand Prix involving the ignition switch, they make the key hole smaller so you cannot put as much weight on it, such as a key FOB etc...
Who makes a key fob that you never want to keep with the key?

Hey William, I have repaired and replaced my ignition sw and completely rebuilt my steering column, but it'* on my 91 Olds Toronado. I have no idea if your make and model would be the same. If anyone knows, please chime in.
I have many pics of both the sw and the column.
BTW my car used to do the exact same thing when the sw went bad.

Well today the car started fine, made it to work, came out and started it because I had to drive to the other side of the plant, it would not crank, just click a few times, finally I put it in neutral and it started....
Got off and nothing I would do would start it, no more clicking noise from any relays, before I heard a click from a relay near the glovebox, not now though.
I am going to try to replace the starter relay tomorrow.
if that does not work I'll try to get a test light on the purple wire going into the starter, and see if it lights up when the ign is turned to start.
I think it is my starter or switch, hopefully it is just a relay though...

FYI, when my sw went bad I wouldn't hear anything when turned to start. nothing. the sw wasn't making contact where it was supposed to.
Also, the sw is adjustable.
doesn't really sound like a starter to me.
Good luck.

Damn, I ordered a starter just in case, as it still sits at my work..
It could be the switch, I hope not though, because I am not sure how easy replacing a switch is, sounds difficult...

Mine is in the dash, the trim that covers it also covers the radio and all...
That cranks and does not start, mine does not even crank..
Oh wait, yeah it is still good to show how to replace it, thanks.

Got under it and tested the purple wire when I had the switch turned to ign, and no 12v sensed at all, not a bit of voltage, so I am pretty sure you were right Tommy, it is the switch, if not that the BCM...
You can hear * faint click in the glove box area when you try to start it, but other than that silence..
The DIC does not light up and say key on ignition anymore, hell it only lights up and shows mileage, then goes out, unless I press the info button, then all I get is mileage..

Bah so many typos, I must have been just waking from a nap when I wrote that,
Meant "a" faint click, and key "in" ignition, dohhhhhhhhhh
Ignition switch will be here Wed or Thur., plans are to tackle the job Sat.
I just hope it all works well with the security system, I guess as long as I do not damage the security wire that plugs into it I should be ok...
I am wondering if my air bag fuse is on the drivers side, and a connector is on each side of the door like his where, until now I have never had a reason to check..
