i had the black side on the outsides. the other way just wasn't feasable. i think i have them in right. ive only driven about 100 miles since i changed them, but its not leaking so far.

Then I don't know what you did. Look where the pins lock into the holes on the newer block. You have nothing there on yours. The pins just hang. If yours didn't fit right, you were doing something horribly wrong. You couldn't have had them sitting on there correctly.
Black on the outsides is one thing. Flipping them around and keeping the black to the outside is another thing.
Many members here have installed the newer design on the older block with no problems and no modifications necessary.

If you use the second design gaskets, you always face the end seal pins on the outside
