So, as usual, more questions to all...
Regarding removing the passenger side half axle to get to the diff...is there enough "play" in the tripot that I could yank the halfaxle out of the differential, without having to undo the axle-to-hub connection? Is there too much risk in damaging the tripot or CV joint to attempt this?
If I do have to undo the axle-to-hub connection, is it absolutely necessary to separate the ball joint to remove the half axle from the hub?
There will be three parts that may need replacing as far as I can tell: the axle seal, the differential cover seal (perhaps like a large o-ring?) and the circlip / snap ring that holds the diff to the output shaft...anyone know if any of those parts will be re-useable? If not, can anyone get part numbers for the differential seal and snap ring? (I could try to post a diagram if that would help)
Speaking of the snap ring holding the diff to the output shaft, the FSM says I need a special tool to "free" the ring...but in the line drawing that tool simply looks like a small, blunt chisel or large flatblade screwdriver to me...anyone know what I'm talking about? (Again, I could try to post diagram if that would help)
(EDIT: I think I found the diff seal at NAPA:

though still interested in the snap ring p/n)

The Gen2 (came out in 2004?) did get alot of bad press for busting pinions (due to weak bronze sleeves/bushings holding the pinion in, or something like that).

This project idea is officially dead. Been after the seller for more info and pics of the part for a week and a half now, with no response. Oh well, just have to spend the money elsewhere

Disappointing tho. Was curious to see how it would work for you.
