so am I correct in saying that if I took my stock airbox and opened up its air inlet, it would be nearly the same?

No.

You want a smooth-walled pipe and cone filter for laminar flow. That'* the best way to increase the intake'* efficiency.

Pulling air through a square filter into a corrugated tube is not very efficient.

custom is the only way to go for show cars. clear acrylic, plexiglas, or lexan isnt well suited for underhood use.

Im not being negative! Its the truth man. I dont have a problem with a little upkeep here and there but thats overkill for my needs.

its probably the easiest material to make it from... and doesnt hold heat like metal does

then why settle for a metal intake tube? why not do some more digging and find a source for something in a composite plastic?
