Allmachtige....the whole point is to get LAMINAR flow across the MAF or your car will run like dogshit. Don't disrupt it. That thing may work for TBI or Carb engines, but not with our throttle bodies.

I have removed my MAF screen with good results. Everyone here has nailed it that it might not work cause of turbulance. The Accordian tube between the TB and airbox is one of the culprits. If you don't have a CAI, then I wouldn't recommend it unless you're willing to gut the internal of the airbox. The airbox itself causes a lot of turbulance cause of the built in resonator.. if you cut that all out.. it should run without a MAF screen. You can always keep a small part of the screen and attatch it just before the sensor to keep the air straight pass the sensor. The reasoning for removing the MAF screen in my opinion is because in order to get the turbulant air to flow straight.. it goes thru the honeycomb openings.. but when that happens.. air velocity slows down because of the change in direction.. in turn slowing the air entering the TB. Will.. if you need a hand with it.. I"m more than eager to help.. who knows.. I"ll probably learn a thing or three..

so... for someone with a CAI removing the screen should be benifital... or might be...

with a CAI.. i believe it will be beneficial.. however.. we discussed this in depths before.. and a few people will disagree.. that is their opinion.. and this is mine...

Drifter, sounds like we're on the same page here. Write up your theory, along with detailed instructions on what you did to your airbox. I did mine differently. I'll combine the whole mess with the CAI, ADTR, MAF, K&N, and post it up in Techinfo as an all-inclusive intake modification guide. Then I'll confirm the screen theory when I get the ADTR....any day now. Hector'* about done with it. I already know mine ran like crap before, so the after should be pretty obvious. When it'* all written up, I'll post it and notify in the Performance forum that it'* there. I'll also upload it to the files section of BI.

Here'* my 2 cents:
I've got an '96 Olds LS (A twin sister to the Bonne.) It'* got the regular Series II 3800.
I took the screen off and felt it made the car a little peppier, and if anything, increased the gas mileage. Then I removed the resonator thing right before the air filter, and that helped even more. I've driven the car for 5 months, and until I saw this post today, I had not thought about it for weeks. This past week, we've had temps below 10 (Farenheit for you Canadians) and it runs great.
Just take it off (The screen that is...) carefully, and see what happens. Worst case, you just put it back on and no harm done.
In my layman'* opinion, it HAS to be an improvement over keeping the screen on because the throttle body can flow more air.
Plus it gives the engine a little bit of a growl on acceleration... kind of reminds me of highschool days when we used to flip the aircleaner covers on our GM cars and trucks. Remember doing that?!

Screens are for keeping bugs out. Do you have bugs in your engine compartment?
