Say,
I found a 16k mile old aluminum Series III upper intake manifold on www.clubgp.com for $25 + shipping. Definitely cheaper yet than the salvage yard one I mentioned early.
BTW, nobody has posted it, but I remember seeing a video of a 2000+ SE with the Cartuning turbo kit.
Did a little digging and found it.

The distance from the front to rear is supposed to drop the temp by 200-300 deg.
....which should be enough to prevent serious detonation but will limit the true capabilies of an intercooler that will drop temps by 200 deg F.
I don't like the idea of sucking engine intake air from the rear of the car.....the dirtiest air available. :?

Ok every one is saying to get an inter cooler so I will. I got the kit in on Friday night. I won't be putting it on anytime soon though. I have surgery in the morning at the Buffalo VA hospital . Damn knees. I'll be down for a couple of weeks they said. Anyway that will give me plenty of time to do some research on this setup. I sell int4ercoolers for tuners so I'll have to see if one will fit. Also everyone keeps talking about pulling the air from the rear. I have looked at this and found I can run the filters inside of the trunk and put a custom scoop on the roof to force the air in. this is going to be a lot of work but I think it will pay off in the long run. Also it will definitely add some nice styling to it. But there is a chance that if I use an inter cooler I will mount it behind the engine and just run the intake up through the stock area. And a big thanks to OLBlueEyesBonne for the heads up on the cheaper intake. Talk to you all in a couple of days.

Ok I'm finally back. Doctor says to stay off of it until the 28th of APR but I can't stand it anymore. I Started today on putting on the turbo. I have decided to install the turbo right behind the motor. I cut the exhaust right before the flange and am fabricating a flange to fit to the turbo. Purchased an air to air intercooler that squeaks in behind the front bumper. I drilled and tapped the oil pan for the return oil line. Looks like I might have to pull out the plasma cutter to make a little more room for the turbo clearance but not a huge deal. I'll be posting pics soon. Also found an interesting set up for my intake. I decided to modify a ram air intake I have in stock that allows me to force more cold air to the turbo. It looks like it will be mounted under the bumper and I'll have to cut the plastic to fit it in right. Only issue I have is when Its not being used for performance It has a clear plastic cover that goes on to keep it from clogging up the filter. Might get to be a pain in the arzs like exhaust cut outs.

mounting the turbo on the rear exhaust manifold? The heat coming from the turbo and downpipe will cause some serious issues with the plug wires and fuse box right above it , not to insult your idea, but your best bet is mount it between both banks of cylinder like most 3800 turbo kits.

I have addressed this problem by wrapping it in heat wrapping. And it is not right off of the manifold it is further down closer to where the cat is supposed to be.
