I'd go with the valve guides in a heartbeat. Classic symptoms. Your description is excellent, especially the lack of significant oil consumption.

I there any oil in the tube between the turbo outlet and the throttle body. Bad turbo seals can cause this also. If the oil return line is restricted the oil can be forced past the seal and get sucked in at the throttle body. My cousins GN was doing the same thing. A trip to the local napa auto parts store and ordered a seal kit, cleaned the return line, installed the seals and all is ok. It would only lose about half a quart in 3000 miles. Now there is a slight usage about a 10th of what it use to burn. But then again the motor has 110k on it.

If it is the turbo, that is BAD news. To get it rebuilt it is like a few hundred just for the parts. Not only that, but the turbo is a really tiny turbo that I'm planning on hopefully upgrading in the near future, so why would I want to dump money into the stock one. Maybe I'll just have to upgrade sooner than I thought...
