Actually, the filtered end of the X-streams is not a velocity stack at all. But it does help straighten out the flow a lot, and giving moer CFM to the box.
A velocity stack is a bowl shaped piece that has no bottom. If you were running a 3.5" intake pipe in our cars, with a 3.5>3" velocity stack you'd most likely outflow a 4" without one. But no one makes them for us yet.

Jason, the inside profile of the end of the filter below the X-stream top IS a velocity stack
Look inside one sometime. They don't call it that, but that'* what it is.

sorry.. no.. the accordian tube is going for sure.. going with a mandrel bent pipeing.. ( the accordian tube would be split in half and cover over the pipeing so the cops at a glance won't be thinkin.. oh !!! none OEM.. here'* a ticket.. see you in court.. I wanted to keep the stock airbox and use as a heatshield in a sense ( and maintain that stock appereance look ).. maybe if I cut open the whole entire front of the stock airbox.. would that be better?

Gotcha, Murdock. I see what you're up to now. I'd cut a round hole to clear the cone by at least an inch all the way around in the front cover. Then attach a flexible piece of black above it to hide the cone
I like your idea for masking the smooth pipe. Are things really that anal up there?

Yep.. it'* that bad up here.. know 6 people between this summer and last that got a $350 ticket for non OEM intake and having to go to court to fight it.. which equals day without pay.. and the hassle of wastin the whole day sittin in court.
I was thinkin of cuttin the front open and leaving the top hold up screws intact so you can't really see it.. now the issue is the back.. would I cut it big enough to fit the pipeing thru? wats the diameter of the stock accordian tube? ( 3.5"?? in which case.. maybe I"ll get a 3" pipe thru there without cutting ) so if I ever need to remove it out.. it'll take a while.. but looks cleaner.. remove the accordian tube cover.. slide the rear airbox piece onto the pipe.. remove the filter itself.. then slide the rear box off the tube frontwards.
EDIT: But you're suggesting to cut an opening only as bout an inch wider for the front or the airbox stead of the whole thing? ( might be more sound to keep as much heat out as possible
