What those commercials aren't telling you is that you still need to change your filter at the recommended intervals (3-7k miles depending on year & mileage). The extended performance (or whatever it is) is an extended drain. Meaning that you still change the filter whenever you would normally, but the pan doesn't have to be drained until you reach the mileage quoted. Don't know if I would go that long on the oil, but I have heard of A LOT of people doing that with the older Mobil 1 syn without any problems. Some were up over 15,000 miles when they got cold feet and changed it...

I still won't be putting anything but the Extended in my vehicles along with a Wix or AC Delco filter.

**EDIT - I was just reading on Mobil'* website. They state that you only need to change the filter when you change the oil... I don't know if I would go with that, but that is what they are claiming.

Yeah, it has already been proven that Mobil One'* oil can last 15,000 miles [the regular stuff]. There is no point in spending extra on that stuff. Personally, I would probably go 10k regular driving, 5k mad-man driving. And a filter change at 5k no matter. Swartlkk is right, in that test of Mobil One'* oil, they changed the filter every 5k, I believe. Or maybe 7.5k.. oh well, they still changed it. They also had to top it off occasionally. I believe this was because they were removing oil for sampling, and possibly because of a filter change.

Just stick with the regular Mobil One stuff, that'* my opinion.

I'm not too sure that regular Mobil 1 will be available anymore once current supplies run out. I think that the extended performance has taken the place of the regular Mobil 1 synthetic.

Actually if you check out the Mobil 1 website they claim you don't need to change the filter until you change the oil. I forget if they were strictly referring to their own filters or not, but that'* what their FAQ said. www.mobil1.com

Yeah I found that out about 4 hours before you posted and added that to my post... SEE ABOVE... Even though they say that you don't have to change the filter... I would only do this with a quality filter if I were to do it at all. If the engine is clean, then there should be no problems with a good filter lasting 10k to 15k miles, but when doing a change over, it is common for crap to be still in the system for well over 15k miles. So even if you change your oil at 3k for the first time, there will still be junk in the system (depending on the mileage of the engine, but assuming 75k+) that would clog the filter faster. So to truely take their claim, you would need to start with a fresh engine and Mobil 1 Extended Performance from day one. Either that or run an engine flush (never have been a fan of them) to get all of the junk out when you change over.

In my bonnie, I stick to a 7,500 mile change interval regardless of what the oil life indicator says (it never has gotten below 15% though). Even if an oil company tells you that their product can last 15,000 miles, they won't pay for a rebuild if your engine blows at 10,000 miles since the last change.

I do it for peace of mind. It'* cheap insurance @ ~$20 per oil change (excluding the cost of the filter).

Mobil Clean 7500 is a Synthetic Blend.
Mobil 1 Extended Performance is a full Synthetic.

Quotes taken from the FAQ'* on MobilOil.com

Is Mobil Clean 5000 a synthetic oil or a synthetic blend?

Mobil Clean 5000 is not a synthetic or synthetic blend. While it does offer high performance, the base stock composition is non-synthetic.
What formulation differences exist between Mobil Clean 7500 and the synthetic blend, Mobil Drive Clean Plus, introduced in the spring of 2003?

While Mobil Clean 7500 is a new formula, there are similarities to Mobil Drive Clean Plus Synthetic Blend. Both formulas are a blend of premium conventional base fluids and a high-performance synthetic fluid. Also, both formulas offer an extra level of cleaning agents versus our conventional oil..

Regarding differences, Mobil Clean 7500 guarantees 7,500 miles between oil changes and is formulated to exceed the requirements of ILSAC GF-4 and API SM. Mobil Drive Clean Plus is an ILSAC GF-3/API SL formulation. Mobil Drive Clean Plus will no longer be offered.
What'* the difference between Mobil 1 and Mobil 1 Extended Performance?

Mobil 1 with SuperSyn technology exceeds the latest industry and OEM requirements. It is designed for vehicles under warranty and will provide protection for the maximum oil change interval recommended in your owner'* manual or by your oil life sensor. Mobil 1 is designed for excellent low temperature and high temperature operation. It is designed to provide the maximum drain interval as recommended in your owner'* manual. Mobil 1 Extended Performance is guaranteed to protect your engine for 15,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first.
Same question, different answer...
