How to make a real cold air intake using your stock airbox!
First of all, you can either buy a short ram intake or use your stock air filter, i bought a -"cold air intake" off of ebay. It is just a chrome elbow piece with a cone filter on the end of it.
The first thing you need to do is completely gut you restrictive stock air box. do this by removing the whole airbox, then take the front half and cut out the inside piece(use a wire cutters to cut out the plastic notches along the edges)then cut out the front of the airbox where the stock hole was,do not expose radiater hose..., also cut out the side closest to the computor. I used a dremel. The rear part of the box is the easiest, all you have to do is use a wire cutters to cut the plastic notches that go along the inside of the box, then the whole inside will fall right out and your airbox is now completely gutted.
now cut away some of the insolation next to your computor to match the side section you cut out...., now this is the part where you can either get a different intake tube and cone filter, or replace stock square filter. if you decide to use an aftermarket intake tube and cone filter then but it all on and put the airbox on over it. i garuntee you will notice a improvment, just ask insane Lss, i did this on his car also. do not forget to reconnect the air temperature sensor(aftermarket elbows should have a hole). hopefully today i will have some pictures but i do not have a digital camera, so blownbuick is going to take pictures of my intake to show you... Sounds very similar or identical to what a few members here have already done. Seems to work well, but the best thing you can do at this point is get rid of the stock accordian tube and find something that flows a bit smoother.
