What exactly is a "Complete Tune Up"?

I have my mechanic check it over each time it'* in, he hasn't found anything out of the normal that wasn't repaired asap.

I know the DIC has it in there, and she'* almost due for one.
I know the dealer has a set price on their wall, but I was wondering what exactly does that do/cover/check on my car?

My shop here, for a "tune-up," does the plugs, checks the wires, cleans the TB, checks all fluids I think, PCV, and some more stuff, I'd have to go check.

I know it'* a list of about 10-12 things, a lot of which include almost no labor time. They try to get as much $$ out of you as possible

Ok on the drive home I did some "road testing".

When I hammer down....
-she goes to 5500-6000rpm before switching to 2nd gear
-she drops into 2nd gear at 70kph
-she goes into 3rd gear at 100kph (at about 4500rpms)
-4th or OverDrive, kicks in when I stop accelerating

Also she cruises at 150kph @ 3500rpms

Since my idle is also pretty high (1500rpms), could this be a throttle position sensor error?

I used my code reader on her, and she didn't turn up any errors.

Yea the exact listing of what is checked/replaced durring a "Tune Up" done by the dealer would be great
The DIC says another 25100kms before the next Tuneup. How often should a tuneup be done?

(and this maybe a dumb question , but what is the PCV? what does it do? does it stand for anything?)

PCV valve = Positive Crankcase Ventilation. It lets out oil fumes that could be harmful if they weren't vented.

Okay here it is:

At 30,000 -60,000 -90,000- 120,000 miles:

Inspect PCV Valve
Inspect Exhaust System & heat shields for leaks, damage or lose parts
Replace air cleaner & PCV filter
Inspect Choke and Hose (if equipped)
Inspect EGR system
Replace Spark Plugs (4 & 6 cylinder), inspect wires and connectors
-if equipped with Platinum plugs, may just need cleaning and gapping
Check Engine Timing, Scan system for trouble codes
Replace engine coolant, tighten hoses & connections
Inspect Fuel Tank, cap and lines
Clean and inspect front disc brake system,
Clean and inspect rear brake system
Inspect parking brake for damage and operation. Adjust if needed

*Service Auto Transmission/Transaxle. Replace Fluid, Pan Gasket & filter...add $89.95

All this is their biggest service package for $319.95 + tax.

Doesn't seem bad, but a lot of these things say "inspect"...it doesn't mean they'll change it if it'* bad. You'd probably get charged extra to fix something that is listed as "inspect."

I have already done a lot on that list so am going to ask them the price of doing some of them

Merlin, is there a specific spot where the car falls on it'* face, or is it sluggish the whole way to 100kph? If I had to guess I'd say the tranny is the problem here. Sounds to me like it'* slipping a bit which is why your revving 3500rpm at 150 instead of 2500-2700 where these cars should. And also 6000 rpm'* is way to late to be shifting out of first gear, 5000-5200 is ideal. I'm not 100% sure it is the tranny, that'* just what it sounds like to me. If u haven't checked the fluid in a couple of months maybe u should have a look now. Could be that it'* just a little low, but if it'* black then you have burnt the clutches.

Sounds like the tranny to me too, but could the timing chain also be a possible problem?

He has already had it fixed Pete, but the timing chain issue would really affect the acceleration. However aged timing chains older pre 92 engines evantually slacked. And Merlin has the newer designed metal tensioner ensuring tightness in the chain

I had a custom install of a metal tensioner before I had my timing work done, confused the hell out of the dealer. I made them put on a newer style tensioner...

Methinks its the tranny too...

Didn't know he fixed that.

Well if it'* just the tranny it could be easy to fix the prob. if he replaces it. I've never even came close to red-lining mine.

(I did red-line a U-Haul at 65mph once. That was pretty funny...I was running for at least 3 miles on the red. The pedal was firmly on the floor! )

You know Merlin my car runs just about the same 0-60 times as yours and i've had everything checked out. Recently tuned up and a KN filter installed as well. My car has lots of power but it'* slow getting up to speed. I've seen 110 mph, but slow getting there. Also my car has 210,000 miles and everything is original. I don't have a tach so I couldn't tell what my RPM'* are but at full throttle it shifts out of first at 45MPH and out of second at 80MPH and will stay out of overdrive as long as my foot is stuffed to the floor.
