GN parts
Now that I think about it. My Bonneville has practically the same engine minus the turbo of a GN... (not just a N/A 3. But I looked up compression and its the same and the intake manifolds and injectors all look the identical. But bigger.....
So, who thinks its a good idea to scavenge GN parts (mainly intake manifold and injectors, possibly MAF and throttle body) in search for better air flow?

The old Vin 3 3.8V6 can make some good Torque.... I would tell you to get a cam that was a little more bumpy, but you would have to find a roller cam as the 87 Vin 3 used roller lifters.. So if you can get one I'm sure it would be a bit on the expensive side...
The only problem I see about using the GN intake is that it will be 180* of the FWD 3.8 intake, Throttle body would be on the wrong side of the engine... But you may be able to use the GN Throttle body if it will fit the Vin 3 intake, and thats if the MAF can account for the extra air flow... The MAF'* on the 87-88 Vin 3 bonnies sucked at best, GM fixed that problem on the 88 3800 engine...
I know that these engines are torquers, and are capeable of more But the more power you make with it, the more the need will arise to have the tranny built to withstand the power and torque... Sounds like you have some good thoughts goijg on tho...
