Depends, what year and trim bonne do you have?
How well was the engine kept? Mine was kept barely up the standards for two years before I got it, It stank like hot oil and coolant til I detailed the engine.

yeah thats how it smells, my dad had it b4 me, he was a rough driver, but took good care of it...96 SE half engine was replaced, water cooler, radiator, battery, altinator, tranny mounts...prettynice

Well, you don't need to do anything, the smell is normal.
I do mean the alternator. The 3800 cover pulls straight up on the drivers' side, then slides out towards the passenger side...

on a 95+ 3800 you have to remove the little nut in the middle of the cover, then grab the oil filler neck extention and twist it liek you're going to loosen it. Once you remove the oil filler neck and this nut you can remove the cover. check for any coolant leaks anywhere/oil leaks under the cover. It'll probably be pretty dirty, so you might as well clean the engine with a good degreaser whileyou're at it. Just cover up the ignition and alternator before going at it. everythign else should be pretty much water tight.
