Engine rebuild L27
Well... after I fixed my car today(water pump/bypass coolent hose coupler) I got an interesting phone call... "someone" needs engines to rebuild and I may be first in line... :o All I have to do Is provide parts (ie, new pistons/rings/lifters, cam if I want...)... everything else can be recondisioned... now...
What kind of parts should I buy... this isnt going to be the dorky 170hp engine any more... I want power... I dont care aslong as it will run on 91-93 gas...
Im looking maybe a natural 210-220? Im having the engine done for free... So I might not mind spending a bit extra on parts...
Should I send the tranny over to the tranny shop too for a kit? it seams pretty strong... but.. you know...
Also I think they might spend a few days on my parking lot damage (doors), and I got a little thing of rust behind the drivers door, on the bottom.
All is OK cuz I can drive my 1987 thoughout the winter,
sence I wont be driving the trofeo, and the tires on my 87 are bald, could I swap tires wheels... basicly would 225/60r/16s fit onto where usually a 215/65r/15 would be?
Also in the spring I'll be looking into some ZRs for my trofeo anyway!
Thanks!

The tires depend on the hole pattern. If they're both 115x5, you're cool. As far as the engine, talk with DrJay for sure. He'* the series 1 performance guru now. And on the trans, if you're building the engine, at the very least, rebuild the trans including a TC replacement.

Definetly talk to him, he knows all the specs and places and what to get. You don't have rocker rollers, you can swap out 93/94 heads directly to gain that. I'd say cams/rockers/lifters/springs could give you more power, and higher RPM if higher quality, a custom burn PCM would also help awaken the beast. Maybe forged pistons, and a higher compression ratio. Also you can bore it out slightly too! If you're getting work for free, then defineltly get the labor intensive stuff deep in the engine now.

Well, I dont really wanna do any computer stuff...
How much of a bore?
I'll spend some good money on pistons.. heart of the beast..
I dont know what I should do about the cam, I might just get a new one.
I'll for sure get roller rockers/cam!
port and polish my intake?
maybe bigger throttle body and headers, and Ill forsure get that 80 series from flowmaster, Even though its just about inposable to put a cone intake on it.. but w/e

Get a cam that is as extreme as the PCM will allow, dr jay knows about this, he can get them for you. He'* got the hookup on all things and will answer all questions. I'd say get new sleeves/bored out sleeves. New pistons will be nice. For the intake make your own! You can get a nice huge K&N x-stream, go get a custome bent pipe (about 20 USD) and build a box for it. You can run tubes to get a "ram air" setup like i do.
Lotsa good mods are cheap, and you can dig and do a lot. Maybe get lighter lifters/valves so you can have a higher RPM!

my advice would be to start with the stuff that is the most labor intesive, and then work your way down. You can always do the computer, intake and exhaust later since they are pretty much DIY. Maybe go with some harder internals for a blower addition later?

I have to agree, get a nice K&N X-Stream filter and a pipe for your intake. You have room in there. You should have no problem ramming air into that engine bay too. But like everyone else said, talk to DrJay. He knows a lot more about this engine now that he'* been through it, literally.
