you wont be able to see it with your eyes, but with a micrometer , you will.
when you buy a block from the dealer, it comes with main bearing caps. you cant take one cap from another motor and put it on another. they are made to fit that certain block.
they are machine fit with a line boring tool so that the diam. is the same and they are in a perfect striaght line.

tha is correct, if you spin a main bearing, the block is basicly junk, same goes for a rod. if you spin a rod bearing, that rod is junk.
when i worked for a GM dealer, we had a customer come in with a GTA that had a huge dent in the oil pan and complaining of low oil pressure. when i dropped the pan, i could see why. not only was the pick up tube bent half way closed, but the 2 nd main cap was cracked. i took the bolts out of that cap and it fell apart. it was short block time for that car.

yep , thats what happens, i built a motor about 11 years ago for my uncle to put in his chev stepside 4x4. well about a year later, he took it to a mud bog. when starting to come out the other side, it let go. we got it home and tore it down, broke 2 rods, took out the cam, wedged a lifter inside the cam tunnel under the lifter valley, the intake was the only thing that was good on it, even the bottom of the distributor was broken by the cam shifting and part of the cam went out the back of the block into the flywheel
one good thing, we had a memory tach in it, i hit the button, i almost fell over when it hit 7600 rpms

Oh no thats ok, I like reading about it too. Aparently it wasen't too bad. He sent all the main caps in to be machined and he sent the last one to a "specialized" shop in the hopes that it was fixable and we wouldn't have to take the engine apart. I didn't think it was that big of a deal so I kinda thought he was rapping off some worst case crap. Thats scary crap, makes me look back about how easy a court case with the guy that jacked all this up would be. First we have the main caps which he said were damaged in a way that I couldn't have done, he said it points to a shotty rebuild. Then the off sized rods. I dunno what to think anymore, this guy was a complete moron.

My friend brought up a good point. What are the odds that the 3 that he did measure "to make sure" were the same .010 under and the others where .011?? wtf

ok, ill say this . and i hope i make myself clear.
YOU CAN NOT HAVE THE MAIN CAPS MACHINED WITHOUT THE BLOCK!
these are to be machined while they are torqued to the block.
if they had them machined without sending the block with them, youre asking for so many problems,
look at my sig ok, ASE master certified auto tech.
i have been doing this perfessionally for 18 years now.

And the story goes on....So I go down there asking for explanation on how the heck he worked on the main caps without the whole block. He gives me some jibber jab about how they made a mold of another one of the caps and used that to fix the first one. There'* problem #1, the caps are numbered for each slot, you can't mix and match them...so anyway I just listen. At first he tells me that they wern't out of round it was that the flange was twisted and they just fixed that. I casually called his bluff and eventually hung up. I called several local machine shops and I picked the ones that sounded the best . Performance Engine Development, Custom Crank, and a few others. All of them said its impossible this that and the other thing, they've never heard of such a technology and if so they'd have bought it years ago. SO almost the second I hang up with the last one the guy working on my car calls. Mind you this is almost the first time he'* ever called me. So anyway he says he called the machinist that did the work and he was mistaken, they corrected the thrust fore and aft. It was perfectly round but the thrust was off. I listened but all along just thinking he'* buying time. I though it was interesting, the other night after I got in a huge arguement with him I went out to check on a few key placed items on the car to see if it has moved. This whole time I've never seen the car move but last night it was about 10feet forward of where it was. This guy is obviously buying time, thats all. I yelled at him about it taking so long, the car moves. I question what he'* telling me saying I have mechanics saying he'* full of it. He calls back with another story. The interesting part is its still only $1000 and he'* still going to warranty it for 3yr 36,000mi. With that it seems obvious that he'* just buying time because he'* backed up and didn't want me taking my business elsewhere. Its kind of a catch 22 though because I think if I try to pull my car out he'll claim he did all that work and want his $1000, and I really can't sue him for lying about what he'* done...can I? What would you do?
