For my (still future) 99 SSEi with the Bose "plate thingy" in that spot, I thought about swapping out the trim piece with the same kind I have now. There'* nothing in the way there is there? I know the older ones have the gain slider of course.

Bob, my SLE has a boost gauge exactly that same size in exactly that same location. I had to slightly trim the reinforcing piece of the dash behind it.

There is nothing behind the plate. I removed mine and ran my XM radio wires through the hole.

I have about one full hour in the project, and Im happy with the results..
