Default H body Newbie...help?

hey guys... lots of GREAT info floating around here... been searching for 6 months for an info area, with ppl that actually have some real info... I'm so happy

anyways .. I need some help decoding my VIN # 1G3HY6930GW450928

it'* a 1986 Olds delta88 Royal Brougham with 319,XXX Kms .. from what I can tell it'* a full load .. but the suspension looks new or very recent (I live on Van Island off coast of BC ... basic surface rust is just a way of life under cars) and it'* not the auto level air rear

basically I'm trying to find the actual engine code and trans code for some basic performance parts.. or what ever can be swapped across or easily adapted

basically I need to do a full tune up on the car and wanna do some basic upgrades while I am at it

- msd DIS4 with wires + coil packs
- custom made "cold air" intake
thats basically all I have decided on for sure

- I am looking for lil more aggressive cam, lifters, pushrods to match and lil more agressive rockers (aka 1.5 /1.6 ratio)
- double roller timing chain ,however I would PERFER a quiet gear drive
- headers

other then that if anyone has any opinions on plugs lemme know...

I have reason to beleive the trans in the car is only about 50-60K kms old ... and the parts of the engine aren't far behind (mechanic shop grease pen markings on a few parts)

doesn't anyone know any simple bolt in peices along the way of "shift kits"

at the moment I am looking at a combo of Castrol High mileage in the engine, B&M trick shift in the trans .. and Z max in both (I know I have to keep putting Z max in evertime i do a fluid change) .. I'm really worried about the trans burning up and giving out I've heard some horror stories .. I would LOVE to swap in an L67 and a 4T65E HD ... I just can't find any right now I can afford... or even a 4T60/65 and keep the 3.8 I have now... I don't want a fast racer or anything.. I'm leaning more towards lowrider/daily driver (nice paint, simple interior mods, air suspension) .. basically makin it look nice and still be driverable and showable... but I want to improve the stock trans parts and get a lil more power (the stock final drive ratio'* kinda suck)

oops.. I forgot one thing... the reason I think it needs a tune up is one the oil condition on the stick and at very light throttle in the city or highway the car seems to either hesitate or search 3rd / 4th ... 1/3rd throttle and more and it accelerates and shifts hard (well as hard as it can) .. and if it sits for awhile idling it'll run a lil rough and on very rare occasion it'll stall .. usually only if it'* been sitting idling for like 20+ mins

I am hoping this is just tuneup stuff ... any ideas???

I found my RPO code list... anyone tell me anything special about the codes?

AG1 AM6 AT6 AU3 A31 A90 B93 CD2 CD4 C49 C65 C75 C96 DZ4 D4R D64 D68 D90
FP3 FQ1 F41 K05 K34 K90 LG3 ME9 MX0 NA5 N33 N91 PB7 QJR UM6 UQ1 U19 U23 U66 U75 UK3 UZG U73 WRN YT9 Y67 Z31 11A 6JA 7DZ 72C 721 729 74U 82E 92D

I know what F41 is ... and I've always thought the car was all tighter then it regularly should have been

1G3 - OLDSMOBILE
HY - H BODY ROYAL BROUGHAM
69 - SEDAN
3 - 3.8 LG3-3
0 - CHECK DIDGIT
G - MODEL YEAR
W - PLANT CODE
450928 - PRODUCTION SEQUENCE

All of which doesnt matter because there are no bolt on parts for the engine. Everything is old school hot rodding if you want to build it. There is currently only one known in exsistence and its on the brainstorming area of this forum right now. It says LG3-3 HO HO. Read that.

MSD & Coil packs are a waste of money. These cars came with awsome ignition systems. They have been know to eventually fail like any ignition but MSD'* will fail sooner. Intake and muffler will help slightly - SLIGHTLY. You have 1.6:1 rockers. "double roller timing chain ,however I would PERFER a quiet gear drive" your kiddin me right ? Its a passenger sedan, there was never a need to make these kinds of parts for that engine. You should have decent tubular exhaust. Some improvement can be made on rear tubes. JR 3800 can tell about that. Use AC Delco plugs that the engine calls for. Theres some way to shim in the tranny, I dont know much about. I'm one that beleives additives are a waste of money. I have taken many cars clear to their high milage death and never wasted a penny on miracles in a can. Final drive ratios can be changed but that too requires a fair amount of tear down.

Why does it idle for 20 minutes ? What you are calling searching might be the torque converter lock up, bad characteristic of this early tranny.

Im just going to hit the more optional stuff here
the first stuff is just your seats and a few trim items
CD2 - low washer indicator, C65 - tempmatic, FP3 - 2:73 ratio - the highest, I have FW2 - 3:06 , F41- HD susp, KO5 engine block heater , LG3 is your engine, ME9 - tranny THM440-T4, Y67 - reminder group ? Thats about it for anything important or unuasual.

Their good cars, you will need some trouble shooting sooner or later for the emission sensors. Sounds like there might be some issues now. Dont let it idle alot, its a old engine, idleing has never been good for engines. Those engines went in lots of cars untill 87-88 when it was updated, and again in 91/92 and again in 95. The high performance fad was not what it is now back in the 80'* and most that bought cars with these engines werent interested in aftermarket so it was never developed. Today the only people interested in aftermarket for them dont really have the expendable cash so there still is no aftermarket.
