97 olds 88 shake/vibration
https://www.gmforum.com/2000-2005-90...ration-296318/
Hello forum,
I purchased a 97 Olds 88 a few months ago.
super nice, one owner, Florida car, had 41798 miles on it.
Owner could no longer drive
New tires, Michelins were installed and drove it home.
I notice it feels like one of the tires are not balanced and it is shaking the car at speeds 60-65 and up
I then have tires rebalanced.... and still getting what feels like balance shake
take it to a road force balance shop, and sure enough, one tire had 18 lbs of road force, they demount tire and turn it on the rim, rebalance, now ok
drive home and still have harsh vibration above 60-65 and up
replaced all struts and did alignment, both front axle shafts (two times), rotors
problem gone? NO
car runs and shifts perfectly, just this harsh shaking
had yet another road force balance at another place, inspected tires, wheels, hubs....all perfect
dozens of no results shops later, I still have the shakes
seems nobody can pin point what or where the shake is coming from
tire places say the tires are not out of round or wobbles of any kind
alignment guys inspected everything, can't find anything
they all drive it, feel the vibration and shrug their shoulders and puzzled
I took a jack and raised tire from ground, inspected ball joints, using pry bar under tire, did find pass side rear have play up and down...in ball joint and replaced
all others were fine
hubs are quiet when rolling, and no resistance
all a-arm bushings look fine,,
with jack under front arm, tire off ground, started up car, in drive, let wheel spin, tc off I do notice a shake on drivers side, removed wheel, checked again
I put all the lug nuts back on to hold rotor, and spin again
the car vibrates like the shake when driving 65 and up
I notice that the AXLE shaft is vibrating, and has a slight wobble to it, the outer cv joint near tire vibrates extreme enough to make the rubber boot hit the bottom of the strut, yes, the wheel is turning fast... prob above 100
could this be my shaker?
One of the mechanics had already replaced my axles, a month later, another says that it looks like I have a bad axle on drivers side, explained, it is only a month old, showed me the wobble so I replace it again.. this one wobbles too
The car had never been wrecked, runs and shifts perfectly just this damn shake while driving 65 and up
I do hear "POPPING" noise from rear of car once in a while, I am assuming its from the rear brakes (drums), they are new too..
anyone have an idea where my shake is coming from?

was hope that someone has had this issue and found a fix.. planning on replace the hub soon, but don't see that that will fix anything, since the hub seems fine

True Car Nut
I have the same issue with my driver side vibrating, I have replaced inner and outer tie rods, wheel hubs, and had rotation and balancing done, the problem got a little better, but like you I still cannot find a fix.
When I can afford to, I'll be replacing my tires, ball joints, drive axles, and I may do the motor mounts after reading that thread, if I find the cause I'll post back, do the same if you find the issue with your car.
Hope you find the issue and are able to get it fixed soon.

Today, I took a trip down to the salvage yard, bought a used hub, knowing most likely that this would not take care of the shaking issue, installed, and sure enough.. still shakes
will be putting original back on, since it has low miles
I also had a strut rattle in the back, so I purchased 2 new mounts, removed the struts by removing the top nuts, and removed ball joints... so I would not need to redo the alignment .. found my wiggler... the nut on the pass side was not tight all the way, impact did not wind it all the way down, being a locking nut
so I went ahead and switched out the mounts anyway, nothing wrong with old ones
used some oil to lube the lock nut and got them tightened all the way with impact
reinstall with hub/brakes was a challenge , trying to hit the upper mount holes and hold up the strut at same time... then wedge the jack under it when finally it dropped into the upper mount holes..... and it started to pour rain about this time
but I got them both back on. and are quite now
if anyone wants the old mounts, your welcome to them, just pay for the shipping...

97 Olds 88 Shake/Vibration SOLVED!!!!!!
Today I solved my Shake/vibration issue
It was so simple....and I'd had thought of it before, but then thought... no way... that could not do it....
I took my brake drums back to Advance Autoparts, Since the had a Two Year Warranty... went back and got two new ones and exchanged .. no questions asked
Upon opening the boxes at home, I notice these drums are different right away.... THey were actually balanced, and had weights welded on them.
I'm thinking, it'* either going to shake worse or not at all...
Popped them on and took a drive down the interstate... and to my surprise.. SMOOTH AS SILK! no shake, no Vibrations of any kind.
Old drums made it feel like the tire was coming off the ground, it shook so hard!
now, with new drums, with weights, balanced... car drives like a dream now
Attached are examples of drums with weights on them, make sure if you purchase drums, that they are balanced by looking for the weight
