1993 Oldsmobile Eighty-Eight High Idle All the Time, please help!
Let me just start by saying that I love that there is a GM Forum so I can maybe get some of my vehicles problems diagnosed before I bring it to a Repair Facility!
So I just purchased this vehicle with 82,2xx ish miles on the Odometer (Original Miles - Owned by a 71 Yr Old Lady)
She said it had a High idle and I thought, "Probably just a Vacuum Leak" well, after thorough inspection for around 8 hrs including replacing both the Upper Intake Gasket and the Throttle Gasket cover I am now to a point where I am clueless, both myself and my DIYer Mechanic Friend, neither of us can figure out now why this vehicle is Idleing at Over 1,000RPM'* in Park. When it is Put into Reverse or Drive the RPM'* STILL are much higher than they should be.
I can be at a complete stop and not even touch the gas pedal and the car will continue to accelerate up until around 30 MPH.
The Cruise Control doesn't work, and my initial thought was that the Cruise Control was stock on, but it'* not even hooked up, the fuse is completely gone for where the CC would be.
We're at whits end right now, and I bought this car so I wouldn't have to drive my Junker 2 Door around anymore, but I find myself driving the 2 Door more since i bought this car since now it'* snowing and with there being ice on the road, I am to hesitant to put myself or my family in a car that accelerates up to 30 MPH without even touching the Gas Pedal.
Any ideas?

Thanks for the Quick Replay, from what I can tell the Temp Gauge is working Properly, Yesterday idling in (P)ark after about 35 Minutes or so of idling the Temp gauge was getting around 200, normally it sits a little bit above 100, so I am "assuming" that it is working properly.
Could it possibly have anything to do with the Thermostat? Although currently it only takes about 5 minutes before the car is kicking out some of the hottest heat I have ever felt from Car vents since this idle is so high.

Well im thinking that if you have a bad temp sensor your computer may be thinking the car is still cold and dumping more fuel to warm it up like they do when theyre cold all the time

Is there a sure fire way to test it? My Check Engine Light was on when I bought the car, and I just assumed it was from the High Idle.
I guess I need to add the Temperature Senor to the list of possible culprits now then, thank you again for the quick responses!

a bad temp sensor should trigger the check engine light so it would be worth checking
Here is a link to the procedure to doing so along with the codes..let us know what you find

Would the Sensor happen to be called "Intake Air Temperature Sensor"?
Would the Temp Sensor make the Vehicle when in Drive actually act as if the gas pedal is being pressed when it is not being pressed? The High Idle is what is causing the Vehicle to Accelerate the way it is if I am correct, but I could be wrong, ultimately, it could be 2 totally different issues.

Nope Intake air temp is a small sensor in your intake tube and that could also play a factor in it is that the code you got..
your computer may be thinking the car is still cold and dumping more fuel to warm it up like they do when theyre cold all the time<<<thats what the temp sensor could cause I.E. higher idle

So in a nutshell my awkward acceleration is more than likely being caused by the extremely high Idle then, alright, as soon as I get out of work in tomorrow afternoon, I will go ahead and pull the codes, and I will report my findings hopefully it'* only a Temp Sensor, I can spare the extra $25-ish dollars for a Sensor if that means the vehicle will run how it is supposed to Thank you again for the quick responses!
