Windows Vista

It has some cool features from what my brother showed me. And I'm sure it will or does have more drivers than XP came with. But he had the retail version before it was released, so a lot of the drivers were still only beta versions at the time he was showing me stuff.

It'* a fine Windows upgrade, but it'* also a shameless rip-off (and not quite the equal) of another major operating system, Apple Computer'* Mac OS X.
That begs the question: Why not just use OS X?
Those upgrading from XP likely will have to get a new computer anyway because Vista doesn't work properly on most older PCs. (See my recent column, "Take your time buying that new computer," for details on this.) So, instead of purchasing a Windows PC, they could — and typically should — get an Apple Macintosh computer running OS X.

Plus, the whole "XP requires a brand new computer anyway" is BS. It might require a brand new system for everything to work. But, just like any other Windows install, you can just leave stuff out, or turn stuff off if it causes issues.
Not that it matters. I'll be sticking with XP for a while. Vista is just too pricey. And I have come to enjoy running a non-pirated OS....

i agree with you mos, and thats how its gotta be for most users... however i work on an OSX machine 8 hours a day, so i am very familiar with it, and can switch from mac to windows effortlessly when i get home to my XP machine...

My only gripe with Apple is that if you want serious performance in a system, you have to pay big bucks for it. For $1000, you can have a pretty powerful PC, which would otherwise cost twice as much for an equivalent Apple system.
As for the OS, I work in corporate IT, which uses Windows. I know it inside and out. OS/X is really cool, but I have found no use for it yet. I want to learn it more, but cannot afford it. Also IMO, both of the OS'* are just as reliable as its counterpart. User error plays a big factor in why people think MS products are unstable.

And as far as Vista is concerned, I'll probably wait to buy it when I get rid of my current machine somewhere down the road. XP works fine for now. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Chinski that comic is awesome!
Vista is a knock-off of OS X because MS realizes what Apple is doing right & better. I think it'* probably a PITA for most people since 85% of computers won't run Vista, if they want it but don't have the money to get a new computer.
I use OS X at work and at home, as well as Windows XP on my PC. I can switch back and forth seamlessly as well. OS X is easy to use, so it'* not hard to learn it. It'* designed to be easy to use.
I DO understand though that those who use PCs their whole life will not find swicthing OSs is completely easy. Most "PC guys" I know know nothing about Macs. A lot of them just jump on the anti-Mac bandwagon though for no real reason.
But 50% of people who bought Macs last year never used a Mac before.

i had mac osx86 running on the same machine i just put vista on...mac really is nice system and its really easy to work with but i know more about Windows than Mac or Linux so it seems that windows is where i'll stay. One day i'll get a mac machine and build a really good Linux box, then i'll have fun with all 3
