It depends on how well u like the car and what all else is wrong w/ it,..like paint, interior, etc,..anyway.... I replaced the engine in mine w/ a crate motor and paid big bucks! But I love the car.

When the ash tray gets full
seriously, if its gonna cost 5k to fix a 500 dollar ride, and its not a classic or rare thing, its time. Or pick up a running identical model for a few hundred and use parts from the old one on the new one

I have a 20 year old Corolla 5-door hatch that is on it'* last leg......uh......tires. It has served us well and has been relegated to the "spare" car the past 6 years(since I bought my wife a new Corolla). But it will need a Lot of Litlle things to keep it on the road(literally). The KYB shocks which I installed over 15 years ago are shot. And, although I could get 2 of them replaced for free, I still have to install them and get the car aligned. It'* about time to replace the tires as well. The exhaust system is exhausted. The car leaks so much in the rain that it will need a sump pump to keep it afloat. The Heat/AC fan lost the Lo and Med-Lo settings and only works on Med-Hi and Hi Speeds. The original 1 watt am/fm radio has lost its "f" and only works on "a". And the body is rusting in areas that it will affect the structural integrity of car. The engine/trans are still strong with over 150,000 miles. It'* everything around it that'* giving out. A transplant is not a bad idea. But how many 15-20 year old Corolla'* are out there with minimal body rot? And at this point, I just assume replace it with something that I DON'T have to work on(too much).

The only cars I've junked were because even the local charities didn't want 'em. The first car I ever junked threw a rod through the hood!!! Looked like a bullet hole...

One time I broke down on the highway on Mothers Day after having to work all day, I was able to get a ride home. I walked into the house and straight to the phone and called the junk yard and told 'em to come and get it. My son and husband walked in the door and saw me sitting there ticked off and asked where the car was. I looked at my watch and said "Its on its way to the junkyard by now"
