Whats your best backyard engineering?
My oldest sisters soon to be husband is eagerly awaiting deer season. However his well used 86 Bronco II (250k plus miles) was needing just a LITTLE attention prior. He had an oil leak, knew it was the valve cover gaskets so we got some late in the day and tore in. OHHH man.
here are some things we found.
Cracked airbox, after the filter. This we sealed with Great Stuff foam sealant.
Numerous wires dangling underneath, mostly ripped loose from previous hunting seasons, outta tie wraps so we used numerous bread tie wrappers (I knew wives saved em for something.
Low pressure switch on the AC bad, handled with a paper clip, ICE cold outta the vents now LOL
oh yeah, the leaky valve cover gaskets too hehhehe
ran outta energy to nitpick much more but we were happy with how it ran that night
What are some ways you have fixed problems in your 11th (finest) hour? With whatever you had lying around?

A leather belt held the bumper on a 85 LeSabre for over a year. It was a northern car and we lost the mount deep in Louisiana. The junkyard wanted $20 for a mount, screw that. The belt worked.
My buddies 92 Dakota kept losing spark going down a bumpy road, so I put a paper clip over the coil post and jammed the coil wire on, We' still working on fixing that right...
I took the transmission out of the 94 alone at 3am, with a lawnmower and an engine hoist. Lifted the tranny five foot in the air to clear the radiator support and used the lawnmower (with hydrostatic tranny) to pull it away from the car, then I sat it down in the lawnmowers' trailer and pulled it over to the shed, where I picked it up and sat it on a pallet, then put a trash bag over it.
That'* all I can think of right now... But I'm a redneck so.... Gimme some time

Oh yeah! We put a rebuilt tranny in the 92 G20, but we didn't have a tranny lift. so we put a cinder block about four foot from the truck and sat a 20' 2*12 under the truck. My dad, my brother and my little sister stood on the other end of the board as I unbolted it, we let it down slid it out and put it in the back of the truck headed to the tranny shop. Put it back in the same way.

we were up north deerhunting. my friend had a cavalier that kept blowing the sparkplug out because the threads in the head were stripped. we jammed a small pebble down in next to the plug and it stayed in all the way home !! 300 miles. a little j-b weld fixed the problem till he sold the car a few months later. lol

When I was 16 my 1972 Pontiac Ventura had a problem with a cracked distributor cap which I used nail polish to glue it together long enough to get me home. My dad is a king of rigging stuff to work. A year or so after that incident I got into a minor accident and broke the headlight bracket and my dad duct taped the headlight in place. I was later hit by a drunk guy and smashed in the whole front end EXCEPT the headlight was still perfect and straight. You gotta love duct tape!!!

the only ghetto rigging ive ever done was when i was putting an exhaust on my mustang. summit sent me an h-pipe that was for short headers, but i had long tubes. to make a long story short, i drove around with open headers for almost a month because the part was on back order. never got pulled over, but scared the crap out of people on say, a 5th to 3rd downshift.

lol i am a master at doing this stuff, but not on cars... examples:
a radio i had didnt work so i took the speakers out and made headphones out of them.
lost my tv remote so i rigged a pulley system out of strings and pens to push the buttons. worked for about 5 minutes, fell over and i went and bought a universal remote.
industrial strengeth velcro to hold surround sound speakers on wooden couch arm.
(now im just looking around my room, lol)
numerous posters and stickers covering holes in walls.
you get the idea.
