so my grandparents aren't doing so well and they've started giving away their belongings. i'm not too thrilled about this, and have repeatedly told them that i don't want anything. my grandfather is still pretty sure that he wants me to have his 1981 VW rabbit pickup. it'* a desiel and a four speed and gets better than 50 MPG. it has over 400K on it and has been completly rebuilt twice. my grandfather is a deseil mechanic and a depression era vermont farm boy, that thing got fixed and fixed well, because nothing goes to waste.
i'm just curoius what you guys know about these things.
it looks like this one, except with regular 13 in steel wheels

They're rare! Hang onto it if you do decide to take it on.
However, they're slow as molasses rolling uphill in January. something like a 20-second 0-60 time.

If you should decide to sell it, I would be interested. I have a soft spot for them since I saw one in highschool.
They are cool vehicles and one would definitely work better for me than an el camino and get better gas mileage than a truck.

Keep it. Not even kidding. If you do sell it, clean it up real nice, and start the price at like $3k easily. I have seen them in my area sell for 4k in sorry *** shape.

A guy down the road from me has one like the one pictured but it'* silver. He drives it 60 miles round trip a day 5 days a week and I've never heard of him having to do any major service to it.

There is one for sale in my town. Not sure of the asking price since I don't have any $. I haven't bothered asking. Every time I drive by it I practically break my neck. I did stop once, it is a 4 speed. Not in great shape, but not too bad. I would love to pic this up as a project.
I would so take and keep that if I were you. I have never seen one driving around here. Would love to have a one of a kind.

If I remember right (I used to be huge into VWs when I had one), it'* basically a car with a pickup body on it. Good mileage, low maintenance, but horrible power (for it'* size) and no payload to speak of.
