This sounds like info to late for you. But my friend was going to replace his Verizon phone (not due for a upgrade in his contract. BIG $$). Anyway a Verizon rep told us that he can buy a phone off the internet as long as it has a ESN # on the back & it can be activated for free over the phone. I forget what phone he bought but he saved a bunch of money not paying retail.

I have Verizon and I must say I'm pretty happy with them. I used to have some Samsung phone for (2-3years worked great but was old as the hills). And in Nov or Dec I got my E815 I love this phone compared to my old one, plus it'* kinda fun to send pictures back and forth with your friends when you not at a pc.
