Variance in North American Accents
When you talk, what "state" do people think you are "from"?
Do you talk like the stereotypical person from your state/province?
I always get told I have a southern accent - specifically have been told kansas or oklahoma, but I have never been to kansas or anywhere near there...

I grew up between coastal New Hampshire and Southern Maine along the beach. But people always say I sound like I'm from New York or the Carolinas (I know, quite a contrast).
I guess the NY influence is from my Dad, he live in NY for 30 years before moving to Maine. And the whole southern thing, guess that must be from listening to country music since I was really young. The family I have down there moved there from northen New England and have only been down there for the past 10 years and I've only been to North Carolina twice and Florida/Georgia a couple times too.

After being in the Army for so long, and then moving to MN, I pretty much lost my accent. But the Texas Drawl kicks in once in a while.
I have no idea what I sound like to outsiders, tho. I don't travel or meet people...
BUT, I have been told by a few customers that I've talked to on the phone that I have a good radio voice, and I should look into that. Only thing I can think is "I'm too pretty for radio..."

I used to work doing tech-support for Comcast, and people either guessed that I was in fact Canadian, or they asked if I was from Michigan.

Well, I used to live in Minnesota/South Dakota, but now in Georgia. When I go up north, everybody comments on my southern accent. Everybody down here says I have a northern accent. I dunno.
