I am deeply saddened. These words spoken by JFK on 1/20/61 spring to mind:

To those new states whom we welcome to the ranks of the free, we pledge our word that one form of colonial control shall not have passed away merely to be replaced by a far more iron tyranny. We shall not always expect to find them supporting our view. But we shall always hope to find them strongly supporting their own freedom -- and to remember that, in the past, those who foolishly sought power by riding the back of the tiger ended up inside.
As sad as the passing of this young man is, each of us should remember that we live in a nation that will on occasion sacrifice the blood of its sons and daughters on the safety and security of strangers.

That'* not a bad thing.

Yes, it was! To take the time out from their own grieving to do that was a wonderful gesture. With all of the dignitaries in town for his funeral, I was hoping that maybe someone might make an appearance.

Just wanted to add that Chad'* funeral made the news even here in Minnesota. This is from the Star Tribune'* "Photos of the Day" feature (ignore the incorrect date):

Thanks for saving that to the BC Server, Jeff. I hadn't even thought of that.

Man, even though it has been a few weeks, this is a tough thing to get over. It seems like Chad was really loved by those who knew him in person, and it'* sad to think that I will never get to know him the way others did.

I couldn't have said it any better myself. In a world where we are forced to become more "globally-minded", it'* important to realize that Iraqis are just as deserving of political freedom as we are. I bet there are thousands of Iraqi men, women, and children who would mourn the loss of Chad and thank him many times over for his role in securing their freedom from hostile government. I'm not trying to start an argument here, but point out that even if he'* not directly fighting for my freedom, I can appreciate that he is fighting for the freedom of other human beings who deserve it just as much as I do.

I have the utmost respect for Chad and the men and women of our armed forces who are in Iraq and Afghanistan.

I didn't even know him and I STILL can't believe that it actually happened. Its just a real sobering moment when you realize how precious life truly is.

Thank you Chad for defending our country, and god bless your soul. You will be missed by the BC family as well as countless others. :(
