Locks keep honest people out.

you don't need a lock to keep honest people out.
the lock is a deterrent, the tougher the deterrent
the less % of bad guys will get in to rob you.
my house was hit but they could not open my
75 year old wafer lock, my 5 year old dead bolt
was open with no damage to the lock. so they
went to the side yard and took out a window.
now i have a first rate alarm (works if the phone
and or the electricity is cut). some insurance companies
will not cover a loss with no visible signs of damage (break in).

i made one out of an old key that did not fit my dads house, and it took me
about 7 whacks to open the dead bolt at my dads. if i practiced it i bet i could
do it in 1 to 3 whacks or less than 3 sec. with little or no noise.

the parts of an alarm are not the expense, its getting it programmed that is expensive. Most house alarms cost less than 2g with programming. Which really isn't anything next to the cost of the house.

The other problem with alarms is that unless you spend the money to have it be cellular, any person can cut your phone line and prevent the alarm call from ever going anywhere.
