Default Sometimes I'm too honest...

I went to deposit my check from work at my bank today and I told them i wanted to deposit it into my checking account. After the transaction I looked at my little stub of the transaction and she deposited $5096 into my account instead of $596. I went back and told her about it and she changed it back (after being extremely embarassed and having to explain to a manager what she had done wrong.) She couldn't stop thanking me enough for realizing the mistake and coming back to fix it. I don't know, but it would have been awesome to have that extra $4500 but I guess I'm just too honest to do that. She would have lost her job over that I'm sure. I don't like to profit off of other people'* misfortune'* I guess you could say.

A big pat on the back for your honesty. That'* rare.

However, they would have easily found the error in accounting. It wouldn't have lasted long

I always thought that if a bank makes an error on their part then they pretty much have to give you that money.. Maybe I'm wrong though. Just thought if you really wanted to press the matter there is nothing they can do about it.

Custom88, you are my hero of the day. There are few that would be that honest, but people appreciate that more than you will ever know. Thank you!

honesty is the best policy. They would have found the error like Bill said and you would have felt like a thief because you didn't do the right thing. You will get a reward somewhere down the line for your good deed!

Well done! Smart move to be honest and up front, but its so easy to make a mistake like that, and one extra zero can make a big difference.

Kudos Custom

The fact that he didn't know they would find the mistake and take it back, but he STILL pointed it out to them is a testament to his honesty. Can't argue that point.

How this works:

1. Teller'* till doesn't balance at the end of the day.
2. They manually go through transactions comparing them to deposit slips and checks.
3. No check for the 'oops' amount is found, but they do find the real check.
4. Adjust account.
