we have wireless internet and its unencrypted. my reasoning is simply that i refuse to go out of my way to avoid a possible criminal element. light does not avoid the dark -- it illumines it. i am morally opposed to accepting evil in society as a given and something to be "worked around".

thats only tangentially related to the topic though. my advice would be to either keep it private or just unencrypt it to allow everyone to use it. if you do that, theres no repercussion for you, you just opted not to secure your network. thats your prerogative. you might let your neighbors know they are welcome to use it, but itd be nice if they opt to use it, for them to chip in a bit for the use.

realistically, they wont. you might get a small token donation the first month, but after that, you will just get used. if youre cool with that (like we are), just leave it open. otherwise, close it. but dont sublet your internet connection.

iv had Wireless for 5 years now.. NOT once has anyone hacked in.

If you setup the right settings its fine

i dont know why so many people get all crazy and scared to use wireless :?

Even when they do hack in, you shouldn't be putting your private information in unsecure websites. Also, if someone wants to spend the time to hack your wireless, they can just as easy dig through your trash or break in while you're not home. The only reason people would get on your wireless is to steal some free internet.

All I know is, if a hacker can read your packets then your screwed. I personally would never share anything like that since I do all of my banking and online bill pays on my home PC. If you dont mind potential criminals getting a hold of that info, then unencrypt your network.

i agree with bandit, hackers got in way before wireless was widely used

the only reason i lock our one at home is that i want to control who uses the connection and dont want it to get used and slow me down

I agree, but you STILL have a point of protection to alert you to any activity.

On a side note, someone should do a google search on how to protect your network and you will see that leaving it opened is a big NO NO, but who am I to say :?:
