Overtime again! and that Supervisors position I mentioned
Woohoo! Working OT again this week; 8 on Friday and 17'* on Sat & Sun. Sorry Geoff - that means I won't be hitting Gary'* on Friday after all.
...who needs a second job! LOL
BTW - anyone remember that my boss will be retiring and that a 3rd shift superviso spot will open when that supervisor takes my boss'* spot? Well we got the offical announcement this week and they seemed a tad disappointed when I said I wasn't really interested in taking it (3rd shift supervisor). I was asked about it twice already. LOL
This year they supposedly got a good raise. I found out it was 3% (total for the year) for all management. whoopie! I just got my 3rd raise this year bringing me up to 6.5% total for the year. I love this union!

I wish I had the job security of a union job.
However working in the tech industry my job security is as low as they get. I always have an updated resume and am always looking for a better job.
Why didnt you take the supervisor position?

1: Its a salaried position.
2: its 3rd shift w/o shift differential (see #1)
3: there are required manager classes. They are only held around noon. and theres no compensation for attending.
4: The management benefits (medical, dental, retirement...) are not that much better.
5: Theres no OT.
6: If the union guy calls in - YOU WILL BE WORKING. No one else will cover 3rd shift...LOL So you have to make sure you get sleep every day just in case.
7: The 3rd shift union guy has been with the hospital for 11 years now = lots of time off (See #2, 5, & 6)
8: the current 3rd shift super hired his buddy from housekeeping. He doesn't get a day off, his buddy is, after 3yrs in this dept, STILL calling him every time theres a problem. That poor super doesn't really get a day off and I don't want to be THAT guy. Don't get me wrong, hes a good guy/friend, just not an IT guy and doesn't care to keep learning.
9: management in the past 3 years has gotten 2.5%, 2.5%, 3%. Union has gotten 8%, 8%, 6.5%. Even if they offered me 10K more the union position would surpass that in about 6 years.
10: Union position has some job security. They have to give notice of layoff and try to fit you into a different dept if theres an opening. Managers get a pat on the back as they're excorted out w/o notice. The 3rd shift union guy was the 3rd shift housekeeping manager. He says he'll never go back to being management again.
theres probably more that I've forgotten. LOL
