I'm sitting here at home on an old Dell Latitude C610 with a Pentium 3 mobile that runs like a champ. They are pretty reliable.
The Latitude was probably the best notebook Dell made. I know 2 friends that can't break them despite trying. Those were built well.

Yep, they still make them too. Expensive, but nice.

Just to answer the question from way on the first page, the Solo is going to continue to be my companion in the dorms for a while. I'm being over protective and this one was bought because 1) it was about time, 2) the Solo might crash any day and I need to have a computer ready, 3) I'm a closet tech chick and I love to have new tech toys.
I can see my laptop can be beat out already by alot of you guys. I'm not saying this thing is even near top of the line but its just what I wanted for a price that I could at least pretend I could affford. I'm happy I went with this one, it seems like a lot of Dells (especially the Inspiron line) have going toward being widescreen. While this one has a wider screen, it still doesn't extend it into being longer then my old laptop (which means I get to still use the pink laptop case yey!).
I'll be happy if this one lasts as long as the Solo has. Everyone always says Gateways are not one of the tops but I never regreted that purchase. Its going on five years and its Windows is getting quirky and its definatly slower and louder, but its running and doing nearly everything fine. Only problem I ever really had with it is the CD drive blew out the day I joined BC but it was still covered under the service plan for another month so that was fixed.

My gateway ate a motherboard and is still waiting on that. my Dell C600 just ate the RAM the day after I bought a new battery for it.

Good luck with the Laptop PJ. I'm sure it'll be around for a while. What service plan did you get for it? 3 yr with accidental damage plan is worth the money as i have said before.

PJ, sounds like your laptop is perfect for what you need it for, and a step up from before. That'* all you can ask of it.

Pooky'* Xmas laptop isn't anything special either. Moderate processor, 512 RAM, CDRW/DVD, and wireless built in. Just exactly what she needs, and not a bit more, but budget was a concern, and I was able to get it with my discount for $504. (It'* a compaq, but I still get the discount as we own them).

If it lasts her 2 or 3 years while meeting her needs, it was worth it.

I think you'll do well too. The Dell/hp thing is just a little fun battle between Hans and I. We work for competitors.

Yep I would also get complete care for 3 years, you drop it in the ocean/river/stovetop/run over by a bonneville by accident, they will overnight you a new system to use. without any questions.

I have always been a big fan of the laser printers and high end inkjets, but HP can suck on this:

Dell Precision M70

Latitude Chassis
Pentium M 780 2.26ghz 2MB cache
2GB DDR 2
100GB 7200 HDD
256MB Quadro FX Video Card
1920 x 1200 UXGA LCD
6lbs loaded

Yeah, yeah you've mentioned it before, and I did go for 3 years service plan. As far as accidental, I didn't up the money for it. My other one did alright, I'm praying the one does too.
