No no no... The 4500 was an improvement over the 4100 as GM had way way too many issues with the 4100...
For a long time thats all we did was scout 4.5 replacements for the 4100... At the very least I'd use a 4500

Most engines today cant stand up to overheating like the old ones could.

My Dad had a '78 Cordoba with the 360 4bbl, and he told me he ran that engine dry a few times, and it got SO hot that it actually seized up. He said he would simply wait a few minutes, add water, fire it back up, and move on until it happened again.
That was in '88, he sold the car in '92, and it STILL runs to this day, his friend in Cleveland owns it now. :o

I think the 318 was an un-killable engine not like todays engines.

Heck you'll make money more money than that selling the cat and scraping the rest...
I say go for it knowing that its not the best engine, drive it till its not worth fixing.

If the 4.5 or the 4.9 was never ran monster hot it will be a good engine for a long time to come... For $300 I'd buy it
