Couldn't I also use the 4100 and swap out 4.5L parts to convert it to be a better engine? The 4.5 is just bored out more I believe.

No no no... The 4500 was an improvement over the 4100 as GM had way way too many issues with the 4100...
For a long time thats all we did was scout 4.5 replacements for the 4100... At the very least I'd use a 4500

If you absolutely have to have a V8 Caddy... go with a 4.9, probably the most reliable out of the 4.xL series of those engines. I believe they have around 200hp.

The 4.9 was a good motor... But neither the 4.5 or 4.9 could stand up to any overheating

Most engines today cant stand up to overheating like the old ones could.

Ain't it the truth?
My Dad had a '78 Cordoba with the 360 4bbl, and he told me he ran that engine dry a few times, and it got SO hot that it actually seized up. He said he would simply wait a few minutes, add water, fire it back up, and move on until it happened again.
That was in '88, he sold the car in '92, and it STILL runs to this day, his friend in Cleveland owns it now. :o

I think the 318 was an un-killable engine not like todays engines.

i know several 318'* in fuel injected trim with 250k plus miles on them. my grandfather used to have dodge diplomats with the tbi 318'* back in the day running as cabs for a business he owned. some of those had close to 400k miles on them

Did I miss something here? a running caddy for $300 and you all are saying no?
Heck you'll make money more money than that selling the cat and scraping the rest...
I say go for it knowing that its not the best engine, drive it till its not worth fixing.
