I'd reccomend a dell for the over $3000 range.
I'd reccomend a HP in the $1000-$2999 range
i'd reccomend a dell in the less than $1000 range.
lots of reasons. and i work for one of the companies mentioned.

Starting after January 1st, I will be able to give my discount freely to friends and family. right now I'm limited to 2 laptops per year (this is how jr's3800 just go his, but I had to buy it for him). This applies to all hp and Compaq laptops on hpshopping.com, and the discount is about 25% off every model you see there, custom or off the shelf.

Customized it was about $1,600.00, which is on the top of my price range. My school (University of South Florida) also offers discounts from certain companies...be nice if I could find a way to combine the two.
My price on the dv6000t starts at $477.99 (discounts can't be combined), and customized options are also discounted.

Just keep these prices in mind if you shop locally. Shipping is free, even on custom builds.

i agree with the hp bandwagon. i just bought mine two weeks ago and i like it alot. i paid $1600 for it w/ tax, a 2 year accidental damage warranty, and a printer. its the dv6000t model, and its been great so far.
