It sounds like he needs a "vacation" from driving all together - not just your car. What you described are not the actions of a responsible driver, at least not a driver I'd want to share the road with.
When I was his age, I though I was a better driver than my father which at that point had been driving for 30 years. I was also overconfident with my driving abilities. I think Mick just wanted to pretend that the car belongs to him. At 17 my life revolved around cars, from the time I woke up till the time I fell asleep, and when I slept, I would have the best dreams about driving a Corvette, a lambo, Ferrari etc. He reminds me so much of my teenage years that it scares. I believe his intensions are good; it'* just that he gets caught up in the moment, and just hasn't the time to think things through. Ahhhh, to be 17 again.

Well Frankberry, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, whatever name you fancy at the moment,
I was 17 few years ago. However, I did not have my music cranked to the max, bass shaking my ***, or whatever, I had no clue if the radio was on until I look at the display.
However I CAN relate to Mick (cool name btw) about "owning the road", the city of Lancaster might incline to agree with me on that.
Definitely chalk it up to his teenage years which will alway last until he'* married.

Just be glad I'm not your son...sounds half tame to what my mom used to have to put up with.
IMO, its part of growing up that you as a parent have to deal with. Use it as an opperturnity to bring out the 17y.o. in yourself again.

you're doing better than me. My daughter is 17 with no job. She was offered her mothers old car when she was 16 and my old one back in December. They were "beneath" her. I was like WTF. She had a cell phone for 2 years and when I signed the contract I told her the rules which she obeyed most of the time. I also told her she had 2 years of me paying for it and then it was her responsibility. Well she didn't get a job so now she has no phone. I hated to do it because when she'* out I like to know she can call us but I had to stick to the rules. I bought my first car when I was 17 and yeah I had to see how fast it would go etc. etc. But my father said, his house his rules, I screwed up in school and couldn't drive the car I owned and payed ins. for. There are times when we as parents need to cut the preverbial apron strings and let them sink or swim.
We can't watch our kids every moment but the least they can do is turn down the radio and clean the car so we THINK they're being responsible.
I would have him get his own car or truck to drive, if you feel he can't afford a safe one then assist in that area but let him pay his own ins. repairs/etc. Believe me most of know now what we didn't know then which is when you work for it you appreciate it much more.
That'* my rant.
and BTW Keep the RAP c!@#$ out of MY CAR !

sounds like hes a good kid, just needs to have consideration for the person who owns "his" car.
what wouldve worked for me [when i was 17, if i lived with my mom, and she let me borrow the car] is something like every time i drove the car and got back, she could ask me if i returned it to the condition i found it in. and making me aware that if i hadnt, when i said i had, driving privileges could be revoked.
just what would have worked for me. sorry, i know you didnt ask for advice, just a place to vent. consider yourself vented and disregard any unwelcome advice, along with my apologies.

He'* saving up to purchase his own car, and if he had his way, you would already have it since he has quit a bit saved up already. We won't let him get his own car just yet since his insurance ( which he is paying) is $800.00 per year on our cars. If he buys his own then it goes up to 4,700.00 . I think that is a total rip off, so we told him that he should drive our car untill insurance rates go down to a reasonable level. He has no ticket what so ever, that'* just the average cost of insurance for teenagers in Ontario. I'll have a talk with him today and see where it goes from there.

Just a few comments, 'cause it'* lunch time and I've been goofing off all day anyway...
1. I agree with Boosty...'cause Boosty knows cool...the driving lights are cool and should be on at every opportunity. My wife always turned them off and I'd go turn 'em back on. So I replaced a bulb every now and then - it'* a small price to pay for ultimate coolness.
2. Rules for teenagers are nothing more than a challenge to them - the heck with the consequences. Sounds like Mick is a pretty decent kid, live with his minor foibles and pray he'* not drinking and driving your car. If he does, then it'* time to drop the hammer.
3. Have you considered letting him buy a car and put it in your name? List him as a secondary driver and his insurance may be a little more palatable.
4. When he leaves his dang cRap CDs in the car, replace them with something from the Polka King or Lawrence Welk. Remember to turn up the volume. Before my kids drove and I had to pick them up from the movies or take 'em to school, I'd always tune into a spanish station or something like that, crank it up, then roll down the windows so their friends could hear. Then, as I stopped to pick them up I'd yell something like "Hey Mikey, they're playing your favorite song!". If you're not embarrassing your kids, your failing as a parent.
5. Change your name to maymybonnevillelivethroughMick.

1. I'm with your wife on that one, turn them on when needed since she'* most likely cool regardless.
2. I think Mick'* ok, but if I ever found out his was drinking and driving, then all hell would break loose.
3. Even if I purchased the car and he was a temporary driver, insurance would still be over $4,000.00. Insurance companies, are on to that. They know the car would be at his disposal.
4. No I don't listen to Lawrence Welk, or Polka, we do share common bands like the Chili Peppers, A/C D/C etc. I'm not what people would consider Square.
5. I can't add more letters to my name, and by the way, Boosty hates the length of my forum name as it is.
