John,
The hardest part isn't starting a program, it is sticking to it. You have taken the first steps--now you need to keep it up! Good job in making that first committment. It won't hurt after about the fifth time...but you'll still be winded.
I am 5'9" and 175 lbs., I could stand to loose a few too, but I haven't taken that first step. I used to run a pultry three miles per day--now I could probably only do two.

John, it'* GREAT that you're getting into shape, but I warn you, you are about at a normal weight. Besides, I LIKE fluff. And i HATE six packs...no guys, i'm not kidding.
I am heavier than people think I am, people always guess about 40 lbs less than I weigh. Besides, it'* personality that counts. I LIKE my fluff, i LIKE my grey hairs, and i LIKE my weird personality
I am 5'8" and 185 pounds (i just lost 10 lbs) and NOT ashamed of it at all. Even my doctor says that I'm not overweight, it'* just how I'm shaped. Not to mention the beneficial curves that come with it ![Very Happy](https://www.gmforum.com/gm/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
Also, be forewarned...when you get muscles, you'll tone up, but muscle weighs MORE than fluff. And you can still run the mile faster than me
I'm an out of shape asthmatic. ![Roll Eyes](https://www.gmforum.com/gm/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif)
Good luck, and keep us posted!!!
