To each his own, but I don't think that is the appropriate way to teach a kid not to smoke, if that was even her intention. I completely agree with parents punishing there children when it is deserved, whatever it takes to teach them wrong from right and filial piety. There are better ways to do what she was supposedly trying to do though without the risk of harming her child.

I wonder what the circumstances were behind that, but that is too young I think to be doing that as punishment. Now later on, yes.
