If you had to choose... (Digital Camera)

That'* another thing. Most non digital SLR cameras are rather ****-poor at high ISO - even my Canon PowerShot A75 is horrible at 400 ISO.

Before you discount Panasonic as a "lesser brand" check out this review.
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/panasonicfz20/
No, it'* not an $800 - $4,000 (depending on model) Canon EOS, but it does everything that I need it too. 12x optical zoom, stabilization, good resolution and color rendering. I've been using it for about a year and I'm very happy with it.
If it is to be an "all or nothing" type thing, I'd go with the optics over the sensor, as others have said. The best chip available won't be able to do much if the lens sends it mediocre information.

Let the Sony'* ring, boys. I'm on my 2nd Sony. First one lasted me 6 years, and now lilpooky has it.
I have the W5, Carl Zeiss optics, great zoom at 5mp. A good lens can make up for a poor CCD to some extent, but not really.
The W5 shoots AMAZING video, and has burst mode for stills in 1mp, 3mp, and 5mp modes. VERY fast, and the largest LCD on the market. Don just got his and is in love with it now.
Sony owns the CCD quality market, and the Zeiss optics back it up nicely. Let it be known that I work for HP, but wouldn't buy one. Those are point/shoot cameras for occasional users. If you want quality, go higher.

HP has it'* place in the world. It'* for the people that either don't want a complicated camera, or can't handle one.
BTW, the W5 can add lenses and filters.

I shoulda posted this earlier. One of the best sites out there for reviews and the message boards are quite informative.
