I think it was 72* here as well on the ECC. Hot enough the sunroof was open. The news guy said it is only going to be 65 tomorrow.....but 70s for the weekend. I'm hoping I will have my car back together by then.

Yeah, but thermocouples are cooler. My office has wires running all over the place. I got one hanging out the window (low temp last night was ~39.6*, high yesterday was ~76.6*, and at 8:30 this morning it was ~40*), one about midway between the ceiling and floor in my office, one at desk level, and one right behind my LCD monitor. They're plugged into a MicroDAQ TC4-100 mini datalogger - about the size of a wallet (well, not Boosty'* stuffed wallet, more like a starving college student'* wallet). One of these days, when I get another Bonneville, I may place one of these under the hood for a while. Tape a surface-mount thermocouple on the tranny, one on the intake, one in the upper rad hose, one on a cylinder head...maybe on an exhaust manifold if I can find the right thermal glue...run it for a few days and see what kind of temps these components are seeing.

Why? Because I can.

How do you get one to tell you the tempurature?

Yeah, but I want to track the temp over time. To do that with an infrared thermometer I'd have to live under the hood. There'* not enough room for me, the thermometer, a clipboard, and my Scooby Doo lunch box. I also want to get actual coolant temperature. For no particular reason, other than just to see what the data looks like.


Yes. But a thermocouple is nothing more than a couple wires of different (particular) material soldered together at one end. When the temperature changes it creates a difference in potential which can be measured. In a nutshell.
Certain metals give a very predictable electrical output when heated. Instruments, like a datalogger, can measure that and correlate it to a temperature. Some digital multimeters can do it too.
