The Camry four-cylinder, since the late 80'*, has been the * family, which is the same family of proven motor used in World Rally up until Toyota'* withdrawal from it in '99 (3S-GTE). Up until 1991, it was a 2.0L 3S-FE. 1992-1996 and 1997-2001, the car you mention, is the 5S-FE, displacing 2.2L. Weak thing that is (125-135hp), but reliable as hell. Basic, economical transportation with uber-reliability to boot. Just don't try highway merging with the A/C on full blast + auto tranny + passengers/cargo. The 2002 and beyond Camry now has an all-new 2.4L motor, the 2AZ-FE. Better than the 2001 motor, no doubt - You can drive comfortably with it now.
As for GM, my loyalties do not lie with them at all. Mine lie with Toyota, rather, old-school Toyotas. When it comes to four-cylinder transportation, I think that GM doesn't even come close to the Japanese, not even with the Ecotec. While the Ecotec makes nice power and all, its NVH isn't as up to par - perhaps it'* the fact that it'* a bigger 4cyl. Big four bangers do that, especially the 2.4L in my Nissan Altima (BAD BAD NVH in that thing.
Also, cars with rear discs dissipate heat better - resulting in less fade. Very old cars with front drums had bad fade - you might not want to touch the brakes for a while after coming to a stop off of a highway off-ramp. Discs have their cons too - more exposed parts. But all in all, I'd go with discs in the rear.
In short, I personally would only go with a GM product if it had a 3800 or the trucks with the Vortec V8'* - but even then, there can be better cars from other manufacturers out there. GM'* practically giving away their cars with their financing and leasing incentives - you can get a really good deal compared to stuff like Toyotas, but even then, GM is losing market share.
That'* my two cents folks, not intended to cause any hostility in any way, shape, or form

Yes i stand corrected, i just remember what it was now. My neighbor in the dorms has a 94 celica, his base engine was similar to the camry, but now he'* got a 4A.
Something very nasty happened to the stock engine in it when his aunt owned it, so she gave it to him less engine for free.

Yeah, the '94 Celica'* base engine was the Corolla 4A-FE, weak thing, but economical. The uplevel motor in the GT-* would be the two litre 3S-GE, much more better with power, like 160hp?

Ok this thread stops here...
REAL LIVE FACTS!!!!
A) GM is Number 1 (ONE) with auto sales with 46% of the market.
B) GM CREATED/Still owns(some of) Toyota.
C) Toyota is Number 2 (TWO) in auto sales.
OBVISOUSLY GM HAS DONE/IS DOING SOMTHING RIGHT.
I think that about tops it off.

History time.
After WW2 american car manufaturers wernt alowed to sell to some other countrys.. So GM just made Toyota to sell to other places. The early Land crushers had a GM truck drive train. The old 88 nova that there talking about its a toyota Tercell. Almost forgot, The toyota MAX thing forgot its full name, but its just a pontiac vibe (quess why... Cuz pontiac cant sell hardly any vibes, so they let toyota take it on)
