I can tell you that Netgear configuration won't be your problem. The TCP/IP configuration is embedded in Windows. I've set up a few networks. But never with XP or a laptop. I'm doing some digging right now. BTW, you've had great advice so far.

I've noticed that Netgear recommends that you do not use the XP'* own configuration utility, that you use the software that came with the hardware...

Okay, open your Netgear configuration utility (should be in your tray or Start menu-->All Programs) and look at the status screen, tell us what it says...

And tell me if this is what your TCP/IP config looks like on the laptop.....note where it says "switch to classic view". I'm wondering if your 'mode' of viewing in XP is preventing some items from showing. They like to hide things to keep people from goofing:
