The FZ5 has a 5.8 x 4.3 mm sensor.
The Canon 300D (the one I have) has a 22.7 x 15.1 mm sensor.
The Canon 1Ds has a full-frame sensor equivalent to 35mm film - 36 x 24 mm.
A medium-format Hasselblad H3D has a 36.7 x 49.0 mm sensor. You pay in the 5-figures to own one of these.
Basically, the larger the sensor, regardless of megapixels, captures more photons of light, hence, more detail.
