I've learned a trick that might help your wife. Get some clear nail polish, and coat both earring posts with it before she goes to bed. When she wakes up, have her GENTLY wash both posts with soap and rinse extremely well. It'* helped my mom and I countless times.

Hmm, that might do the trick. AND, I'll get bonus points for "caring enough to try to fix it".
