I was going to add my Trans Am does not require premium with a 10.25:1 Compression ratio. But Premium is reccomended for best performance.

Have any test actually been done on production GXP cars or are they just estimating?

The Vibe GT requires premium -- it has an 11:1 ratio. It has a knock sensor that will retard the timing if you use regular.

They stress in the manual that it is ok to use regular on a temporary basis, but you should fill up with premium as soon as you can find it.

As far as the "equal" performance, I can't answer that, I can only assume that the added power came will an increase in weight that cancelled out the short-term benefits. Or, perhaps, the test driver couldn't run the car through its proper paces.

I second being able to say ALL northstar powered vehicles REQUIRE premium. They all have knock sensors, and engine will retard.

So, if I do get a GXP next year, I will still have to buy the high-dollar stuff AND will be getting slightly worse fuel milage? It should be worth it.

Not all Northstars require Premium. My Caddy didn't. I think it varied by model.
