As far as older late 80s beamers being reliable. I'd say that is not that accurate of a statement, well drivetrain wise they are in the 3800 ballpark but electronic wise.... I've known 3 peope with older 80s bimmers and yeah...it makes my 220,000 '87 beat up olds look like a dang reliable ride.

I used to think the same way as many. I assumed BMW was just overpriced underpowered crap back in the 80s. Though the 745i I have is much newer I am now a BMW believer. When they call it the "Ultimate driving Machine" they are not kidding.
I still love the Bonneville and mis my GXP greatly but this BMW is intoxicating.

Owning a Bonnie is not a requirement; the fact that you had one and you have knowledge and know-how from working on you car, you have the possibility to talk someone through their problems (maybe an exact problem that you have had), is the big thing.
