definetly a point if hes got ME... thats like the worst operating system EVER MADE..... i work in IT.... and im a little bitter about a lot of things microsoft does.... but ME is by far the buggiest OS ever.

We just upgraded to XP Pro, no problems yet. It'* actually preety cool. I had 98 2nd Ed., and it wouldn't restart right, and if it went to sleep mode it wouldn't come back most of the time, and it wouldn't shut down. Now with XP no problems. I'm running with a HP 733Mhz Pent.III, with 256 MB of ram and a Geforce 2 64 MB video card, with cable modem. She runs like a beast.

Go with 2000 pro, less quirks and all around a better op sys than XP. If you go with XP plan on doing a lot of defraging and disk clean up. I had XP, for the first few months it ran great, every menu I clicked on popped up right away. But as I installed more programs XP slowed down and I was defraging my drives about every week or more!!!
My friend who furnished my copy of XP works at Alpha Video(check alphavideo.com to see what they do) they switched BACK to 2000 pro because it had less problems. In about year XP will be good to run because they still need to get all the drivers out there.
You'll be alot happier with 2000 pro, trust me!

Any operating system your going to have to defrag the hard drive. When you install and delete programs it creates unneeded clusters on your hard drive making the computer run slower, plus XP recommends doing it like once a month or so just to keep things running top notch on the hard drive. When you defrag the hard drive it puts the clusters in order sort of speak, instead of them being all over the place. So then the hard drive will take less time to find the information it needs after it has been defraged.

I work in the IT dept of a private HS. and we have a majority of 2000 professional computers..... but the ones that we have upgraded to XP have had far less issues then the ones that we havent. I guess it really depends on what kind of hardware you've got but i havent run into any hardware that XP didn't natively support or make it REAL easy to get online.

I'm one of the lead Desktop Support techs for company with 3000+ computers. Here is what I know:

ME - Worst OS ever made, DOS 2.1 was better

2Kpro - I use it at home and we have some installs at work as well. This OS we have been able to install on every type of pc that we have tried so far. Everything from an old IBM 12u to an old Thinkpad laptop to Compaq desktops. Easy to install and easy to manage.

XP - Not a bad OS either. Just not real fond of some of the "features" that MS put in it. My understanding is that it has had some trouble (at least in the earlier releases) of multitasking programs, the passport signup that pops up when logging in, and some hardware compatability issues with older hardware. If you use the "non-home edition" :homie: you will be alright.


Nothing really wrong with either of them but my experience so far says 2Kpro is still a little better, then again, anything is better than ME!

I'm running XP Pro.
Like it because we use 4 desktops, one for each member of family so it can be personalized for everyone.
Also like being able to control children'* useage and accessibility.

It does have a few annoying features mentioned above.

I'd love to run XP pro, but when installing the OS, the software generated a report listing all products that wouldn't work after upgrading from 98 to XP...my video/TV card, DVD drivers, AutoCAD etc, the list went on and on

Will, have you got all the necessary software upgrades and drivers to make the XP jump?

I have used every Windows OS from 3x to .net Server 2003. I love Windows XP Pro. It definitly is a great system, and it should install, unless you have a bad disk. You must make sure it is properly formatted, or Zero-Filled. I believe WinME uses FAT32. XP needs NTFS.

I work in IT and I am a technitian, so I've seens lots of problems like the ones I have heard.

XP Pro has lots of drivers built in, so it should work with most hardware. Win2k is like XP without the drivers basically.

If you are gonna go with XP, go with XP Pro. It is much more stable.

And if you want to have an OS that blows away Windows, get Linux.
