John was right. Clearly he wasn't overly concerned about any possible losses. Also, how many people do you know personally that have had their purse snatched from the shopping cart at a food store when they went around the corner for a minute? I've only been around a short time, and maybe it'* because I don't know many people, but I don't know a single person that has had that happen. That'* also why I scratch my head at people who are scared of carrying actual cash on them. That'* just me though... Go John!

Well, since you asked, I once had a shopping cart taken while I was just at the endcap checking on something. There was no purse or valuables in it, but there were a few grocery items in it. I stepped away for about 30 seconds and when I returned there was a guy zipping around the corner at the other end of the aisle.
I found the few groceries I had in it stashed on the shelf next to where it had been. I guess the jerk felt he needed that cart worse than I did.
Point is, that could have been the cart with the purse...

I'm surprised by a couple of the responses. Interesting though. Personally I don't care if it'* implied or not. As another person it'* your responsibility to watch out for the bad people of the world. Maybe I'm old school or over observant, (prolly pretty anal) I notice things...I see things..and if something isn't right I make sure it becomes that way.
In my book, John is wrong. Being on the phone is merely an excuse. I've never forgotten how to breath when on the phone because I wasn't paying attention to my breathing. He knew the purse was there, in fact is was less than 3 inches from his hands. Joint account or not...doesn't matter. Wanting to look at something around the corner....was the cart too heavy to push? I doubt it.
With that said...I understand there are people out there that can't multitask. They have trouble breathing and chewing gum at the same time. In that case...they shouldn't chewing gum.

I think he'* right. My gf knows that I'm a dumbass. When we are at a restaurant or something and she gets up to go to the bathroom, she leaves her purse at the table with me. But, she never just gets up and leaves it. She picks up the purse from next to her, and sets it on the table right next to my beer, and tells me to watch it. Therefore I do, but she knows I am dumb, so if she doesn't say it, not my problem.
But I would still get blamed for it, just like everything else.
It goes in one ear and out the other, just like everything else

gosh....I watch over other women'* purse'* in the bars..even strangers I don't even know...why? because....it'* the right thing to do. The problem comes down to communication...as with all problems - it'* generally a miscommunication. The wife assumed the hubby knew that her comment of "i'm going over here" meant "you've got the cart, watch my purse." After 13 years, I would think he'd have those subtle inferences figured out by now....
What if the shoe was on the other foot. What if he had an expensive leather coat that he put in the cart....and she was pushing it...and he said he was going to look elsewhere....she'* left w/the coat and cart...wanders off looking at pot pourri ....he'd probably be mad at her.

most of you are barking up the wrong tree, as i see it. its not about "its his responsibility, its not his responsibility, blah blah blah" its about whats right and whats wrong. he was wrong, because he was inconsiderate. its not about what was asked of him, but what he could do to help another human being.
