Default Any Projection TV Guru'*

I don't think there are any on this forum but thought I would give it a try by listing the details.

Model # PS 60690 Chassis # PTK 188AC.
When I press the power button the green light flashes on and off 3 times. While doing this I get a bright flash for the left projector (facing front screen) area while at the same time, 3 high pitch squeal sounds. There is no response from the other projectors and this is visable due to front and rear panels being removed during inspection.

Is it possible it'* the HV Splitter?

My projection TV would make them three noises like you said, and it wouldn't turn on. I took it to a TV repair shop and they replaced a couple things on the board. $175 later works like new.

If you don't get a reply, go to avsforum.com. Find the DLP section and you'll probably find a thread for your model TV where you can ask.

Thanks for the suggestion Grimm, I've already done that in there Rear Projection section but when I didn't get any replies, I decided I would try here.

I did a test by removing the red lead wire going to the HV Splitter, isolating it since it carries about 33,000 volts and plugging the tv back in. I then used the remote to turn on the TV and it didn't turn off and on like it did before, it actually stayed on, It had no volume since I bypassed it and no picture but I belive that should tell me the HV Splitter needs to be replaced.

I'm hoping for a guru to chime in and give me some advice.

Bright flash may be shorted CRT, sending it into shutdown.
The "3 strikes your out" startup is normal for the set trying to start.
The squealing sound you hear could be a load on the SMPS or perhaps it'*
normal since you have high voltage and your head is in the set.
Quick test is to remove the red kinesocket from the CRT and see if it
fires up.

Thanks for the suggestion sonoma_zr2, if you have a chance read my previous post to see what procedure I've tried so far.

As for the other forums, there doesn't seem to be any responses that are of any value.

Thanks for the link, I've called several shops, the going price is $80.00 just to come and take a look at it and the estimated repair cost is between $400.00 & $500.00. I've had it repaired several years ago and that was they charge me then also.

Yep projo’* are expensive to keep up.

The PTK188 is a difficult chassis to work on and some shops will not touch them.

What was replaced the last time it was repaired?
