I've found Nortons works well, used it for many years myself, but it can be a real pain to uninstall as it hooks into the system quite a bit.
Currently using AVG Free on all my pc'* and it has worked as well as Nortons imo. I tested AVG side by side with Nortons for a full year (AVG on the kids pc) before I decided to stop paying Symantec their yearly blood money. No viri ever on any of my pc'*.

AVG free FTW!!!!
Actually Road Runner gives us the new version with a Spy Blocker and all of th other goodies too.
But I always use AVG for those who don't have RR

You must be confused... My FREE AVG updates automatically for FREE. And yes it updates both the viri signatures and the program itself (if theres an update for it).

Kaspersky, Panda, AVG, aVast are all good ones
